What is the best game engine available to start developing games for intranet and multi user?

Hi there,

I wanted to start my career in game development. Firstly i would like to know where should i start. What is the best game engine available in market? what do the masters (World of WarCraft, Quake) use?

What is the best game engine?

Best Game IDE?

Supports Multi User environment?

3D and easy to use game editors.

Please advise and help me.What is the best game engine available to start developing games for intranet and multi user?Your best bet may be Unity: generally viewed as one of the better rapid 3d game development tools at the moment.

Unity is now free, and is a 3d game creator that runs on Windows and Mac. It also sports a web player, so games can be published to the web.

There is a pro version available as well, which sports iPhone output and some more advanced features.

Other options include Quest3D and GameCore:

To create your own 3d objects you will need a 3d animation package - Blender works extremely well with Unity and most of the others.

Talking of Blender: this one also includes a complete 3d game engine.

Some of the above mentioned apps allow you to create games without programming, but all offer scripting as well. Some you can extend yourself with C skills. Check them out. All, except for dxStudio have proved themselves in 'real' game development.

PS game developers like Blizzard program their own engines and tools. If you are serious, get into C++ programming and choose an IDE to your liking that is compatible to a game engine you chose to use - look at http://www.devmaster.net/engines/ for an exhaustive list of game engines. What is the best game engine available to start developing games for intranet and multi user?UNITY looks awesome :P
