A good way to enter video game design and creation?

I am very serious and passionate when it comes to selecting my career as a video game designer/programmer/or anything related to it. I would like to enter the business and I want to know the best way about doing that. I understand the difficulty and accept it. I am 17 years old and live in Massachusetts and would preferably like to stick in New England for schooling. If anyone has information on colleges or other education on how to get into the business it would be greatly appreciated. I hear that being a programmer is the best way to enter, and if possible could anyone tell me how to become a good programmer, or enter a good college for this.
