Well all together there is a total of sixty minutes of playing time and about forty minutes of Intermission. However with all the stopage of plays they usually last for 2 1/2 hours, without overtime or a shootout.
It is actually between 2 to 3 hours, regardless of overtime, during the regular season. What could make it last longer in today's NHL is a long shootout but the longest one I have seen so far was 8 rounds although I believe one went longer.



Example: The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals last night 2-1 in a shootout for a 5-4 win. That was 60 minutes of regulation game time, five minutes of overtime, and the amount of time it took for six men to take penalty shots in the overtime. The official start time was 19:11 and the game ended at 22:03 making the game less than 3 hours at 2 hours and 53 minutes.



If you ever want to test your stamina got to enough playoffs games until you get stuck at one that goes into overtime and then double overtime, and maybe triple overtime. Playoff overtimes are all 20 minutes with a full 15 minute break in between.

The game will last 2 1/2 - 3 hours but I would try to give yourself 2 1/2 -3 extra hours for time to get back to the airport plus security especially if the game is in Detroit who would draw more fans.

Listen to JK and give yourself a full 3 hours just for the game. Even if it doesn't go into overtime or a shootout, the game could still go almost that long. And, you are also going to want to give yourself plenty of time to get out of the stadium and get to your car....not to mention traffic. At the very least I would give yourself 3 hours to get out of the stadium from the time the game is scheduled to start. No one wants to leave a great game early just to catch a flight!

It usually runs about 2 and half hours maybe 3 hours and then if there is OT and a SO it could be a little longer.
The games I have been going to lately (Anaheim Ducks games, coincidentally) last about two and a half hours, but those have all been regulation games. You have to factor in the possibility of overtime and/or a shoot-outs.
3 hours is the correct answer. Don't listen to the guy saying 2 halves! Idiot! There are 3 periods in hockey and overtime and the possible shootout would add about half an hour.

Well, there are 20 minute periods and each game has 3. The intermission between the 1st and 2nd and the 2nd and 3rd is usally about 15 minutes....give or take 30 minutes for time stoppage, and you should be good...
